Empowering Youth

The   40   Developmental   Assets   are   building blocks    of    healthy    development    that    help young   people   grow   up   healthy,   caring   and responsible.      Assets   identify   a   set   of   skills, experiences,    relationships,    and    behaviors that   enable   young   people   to   develop   into successful    and    contributing    adults.        The Assets    Coordinator    at    Sterling    Township delivers   asset   rich   activities   to   Giving   Power to     Adolescents     (GPA)     youth,     and     the Sterling/Rock   Falls   community.      Expanding the   use   of   the   asset   framework   provides young     people     with     an     opportunity     to acquire    Developmental    Assets.    The    more Developmental       Assets       young       people acquire,      the      better      their      chances      of succeeding   in   school   and   becoming   happy, healthy,   and   contributing   members   of   their communities and society.  The    Assets    Coordinator    provides    training and workshops to youth and adults in the

area   on   an   ongoing   basis.      The   training   and   workshop   are   aligned   with   the   40   Developmental Assets .      The   frame   work   of   the   developmental   assets   consist   of   the   20   Internal   and   20 External   Assets   young   people   need   to   grow   healthy   and   develop   resistance   skills   needed   to become   thriving   members   of   their   community,   and   society   as   a   whole.      The   framework   is structured    by    8    categories.    In    the    Internal    development    areas    the    categories    include: Commitment    to    Learning;    Positive    Values;    Social    Competencies;    Positive    Identity.    In    the External   development   areas   the   categories   include:   Support;   Empowerment;   Boundaries   and Expectations; Constructive Use of Time. The   Assets   of   the   Month   will   be   displayed   on   the   Center   For   Youth   marquee   and   utilized   in   a coordinated    effort    with    area    organizations    to    further    promote    the    practice    of    using developmental   assets   in   our   daily   lives.      Asset   rich   events   are   planned   throughout   the   year   to help bring about an awareness of developmental assets in action in our community.
